Until quite recently, Phellinus linteus was almost unknown outside the Korean peninsula. The mushroom is a relative newcomer and a rising superstar. For several hundred years, Korean physicians have prescribed Phellinus linteus as a treatment for cancer, stomach ailments, and arthritis. In traditional Korean medicine, the mushroom is known to ease pain caused by inflammation and to treat a red nose brought about by the immoderate drinking of alcohol. Recent studies done on laboratory mice have shown that the extracts from Phellinus linteus indeed possess an anti-inflammatory effect in the treatment of arthritis, and could possibly be a new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Mushroom polysaccharides help awaken the immune system and keep it alert. It stimulates both the cell-mediated and the humoral immunity, proving that the mushroom is a potent one. Phellinus linteus extract is also proved important in preventing the current spread of allergies and asthma. It is a potent antibacterial against the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) bacteria. Phellinus linteus has properties that can regulate blood sugar levels. This follows the discovery of a compound known as interfusing A. Scientific research performed recently in Korea on laboratory mice with metastatic melanoma tumors shows that although Phellinus linteus doesn't work directly to kill cancer cells, it does indeed help the immune system work better. Therefore, the mushroom might be useful as an adjunct to chemotherapy and other anticancer treatments. It is also likely to possess anti-angiogenic activity, as reported in 2004 by researchers from Sookmyung Women’s University, in Korea, account for these results. Phellinus linteus is used as an ingredient in skin creams because it is believed to rejuvenate the skin since the mushroom contains a very potent antioxidant. It may also help treat atopic dermatitis. A recent study conducted by the International University of Korea found that extracts of medical mushroom Phellinus linteus are beneficial for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia.
